Abstract
Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammation of the optic nerve. In its typical form, ON presents as an inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the optic nerve, which can be associated with multiple sclerosis. Atypical forms of ON can occur, either in association with other inflammatory disorders or in isolation. The differential diagnosis is extensive, and prognosis and treatment depend on the cause. Substantial developments have occurred in diagnostic work-up, understanding of pathophysiology, and treatment approaches in optic neuritis. In this review we provide an update of these developments.
